I cannot find how to disable Photos (v.3.0) from trying to recognize available images for uploading, and I am uncertain that even that is the cause. I have Mac's Image Capture set to "Do Nothing" when a USB device is detected. In LR/Preferences/General tab, I deselected "Show Import dialog when memory card is detected", but this had no effect. This means the camera has to be connected to the computer through its USB port, but once its plugged in you can opt for single.
